I have been working with this image for about 2 years. I took the shot under the freeway near the
ArtSpan offices on 8th and Brannan when I was dropping off a piece for an exhibit. It was afternoon, and the light was amazing.
I made an etching of it - my first aquatint. The image above is how I began to mask out the areas so I could build up my lights and darks (the longer the plate is exposed to acid, the deeper the etch, and the darker the tone)
This is a watercolor study of how I wanted to tones to play out.
Here is the final etching above - I liked the result, but it was a wee bit small, only 6"x4".
For the last year or so I have been toying with the idea of painting the image on canvas. Yesterday was that day, when I put some hours into a painting that had been sitting around the studio for months. Here is the result:
This is 36"x24". I have just a little more work to do to it, but it will be ready to show on Friday for our
event at the studio. Hope to see you there!
Today we celebrate St. Patrick's day at the Beach House. We have Annie's family in town from Wexford, Ireland, and we'll be hosting a party for about 40. Here is a little leppy-dude to commemorate the day:
