It had been too long.
My schedule, as of late, has not been my own, as I have been busy starting up with a new job, a job which allows Annie and I to pursue that new house I mentioned a while back. While all the paperwork is lined up, everything hinges on the sale of our house, and there have been no takers yet. Yet every morning as we leave the place, it is in showroom condition: beds made, dishes done, counters cleared, fresh flowers, and clean rugs. Coming back home is nice, especially after the long days we have both been putting in, but this limbo of being between houses is awkward.
Yesterday was the first free Saturday we have had in about a month. I got to the studio early and put on some tunes and proceeded to clean the joint up a bit. Sorted papers, payed bills, sorted prints, that kind of thing. Then I got to painting - as I had been haunted by visions in that half-awake state while lying in bed, and I had to commit them to canvas. I had a good day with the brush, finishing two paintings that had been started earlier this year:
Pomo
Acrylic on Canvas
48"x24"
I named this after an area near Jenner, that the mouth of the Russian River, that I toured with my friend Erik while camping in April. I was taken in by the cool blue light from the Pacific coming through the dark redwood forest. Erik and his wife Margaret recently purchased one of my tree paintings, Muir, and part of my motivation to finish this one was to fill the hole left on my living room wall. But I have the sweet satisfaction that Muir found a good home.
I like the result. I have been painting trees for years and suspect I will continue to do so. Onto the next:
Stacks
Acrylic on Canvas
36" x 24"
This one was already layed out, I just needed to paint in some color fields. It is based on a hike I took with the lovely Sarah Chase in the heart of the Oakland shipyards back in March. I prepped the canvas with a red gesso, which made a fantastic base for adding in these colors. I am keeping this one simple - I could surely add more detail but I really like the balance of the composition as it is.
Today I plan on going back in there to work on another one. Its great to be painting again.
Thanks Damon! Wish you could see it in person.
