On my 40th birthday a guy named Paul brought me a bottle of homemade wine and a grocery bag full of fava beans. I tried the wine, and didn't like it. I tried the fava beans, and have been singing their praises ever since. They taste the way spring makes me feel.
So on my way home from the Sonoma Coast yesterday, I stopped at a roadside shop and bought myself 3 pounds of the ginormous fava pods. Today I opened them, and slipped the tender little beans from their velvety pouch. Then I blanched them, and removed the sweet green goodness from the shell.
Good God. They were amazing. If you need a recipe, try this one.
